Book of the Week: Wright on Time Arizona (book 1) by Lisa Cottrell-Bentley

Today I'd like to share what will prove to be a great series of mid grade adventure books. The books are about the Wright family. Dad, Harrison and mom, Stephanie are taking their two children 7 year old Aidan and 11 year old Nadia on an RV trip around the United States. They will be home schooled as well as get to see up close and personal the entire country.

The first book takes place in Arizona. The Wright's are about to explore one of the many desert caves. Aidan wants to see bats. Nadia wants to see minerals and rock formations. Will Aidan see bats? What kinds of minerals do they find? What mysterious glowing thing is buried in the rocks? You'll have to read the book to find out.

Lisa Cottrell-Bentley's books are a great way to learn about some of the interesting facts each state has to offer. If this book is any indication of what the entire series will be like, we are all in for a fun and interesting ride along with the Wright family.

So how does Lisa take her book beyond reading? In the first pages, there is a two page spread of Arizona facts that are beautifully illustrated by Tanja Bauerle. Things like:
State insect

State mammal
State flower
and more. At the back of the book Lisa has created a six page glossary of terms for young readers to learn a bit more about some of the things mentioned in the story. She also has a preview of the next book "Utah," a write up about the mysterious item they find, more facts about Arizona and a contest for young readers to enter. With links to her website as well Lisa has created a great learning tool.

Check out her website and pick up your copy today.

While you're there, check out her game page, blog by Nadia and character bios as well.

Take a look at her trailer. Enjoy!

Book of the Week: Doing My Part by Teresa Funke

How much do you remember from history class about World War II? Teresa Funke has written several books on the subject.

"Doing My Part" is one of her stories. She uses real life experiences and spins a fascinating, can't put down, story about what life was really like for people in America during the war.
Here's what the back cover says:

Based on a true story . . .

Until World War II came along, fourteen-year-oldHelen Marshall’s biggest problem had been her height.Few men in Hayden’s Valley, Illinois are as tall as Helen. But when Helen’s mother is hurt and can’t work and her favoritecousin ships off to fight, Helen must find a way to supportboth her family and her country. Along with her best friend,Janie, she takes a summer job at a war factory and discoversthat not everyone welcomes her enthusiasm.
Determined to prove she can handle her new responsibilities,Helen must confront a lazy boss, two older women who try to slowdown her work, and townspeople who gang up on one of their own.But when she answers the eerie cries of her mysterious Germanneighbor, Mrs. Osthoff, Helen learns the true sacrifice of war. Andwhen she keeps a secret for a friend, she realizes that grown-updecisions sometimes have life-or-death consequences.

Teresa has done an outstanding job of bringing a part of history to life. Her characters are so believable you'll feel like you're right there with Helen as she goes through a life altering summer.

Book of the Week: Sparkles the Fire Safety Dog by Dayna Hilton

This week I have a very special book/project to share with you.

"Sparkles the Fire Safety Dog" by Dayna Hilton teaches children all about fire safety. Dayna is a firefighter and currently serves as a Public Fire and Life Safety educator in Clarksville, Arkansas.
With the help of father and son who are also firefighters, she developed a complete package of fire safety information that's sure to delight children as it teaches.

Her book walks you trough a day in the life of Sparkles as she helps Dayna teach children fire safety. The photographs in the book show Dayna, her son Michael and Sparkles get ready for the day and how they help children learn what to do in case of a fire.

Dayna has taken this book beyond reading in many ways. First she has an audio CD available where the story is read with and without page turning prompts. There is also a song about Sparkles.

If you go to Sparkles website, you will find activity sheets, games and much more. Sparkles even has a fan club your children can join.

To get her message out, Dayna has been on the "PBS KIDS Sprouts" as well as "Fox and Friends."

Where can you buy her book?

This is a must have book for all families with young children. You never know, these lessons could save your life.

See you back here Wednesday with some fun craft sites.

Book of the Week: Tree House in a Storm by Rachelle Burk

This week’s book is about natural disasters, hurricanes to be specific.

Kenny and his sister Allison are growing up in New Orleans back in the 1960’s. Their favorite way to spend the day is up in their tree house they built together. Then along comes hurricane Betsy and not only destroys people’s homes, but also takes down the mighty oak tree where their tree house is. But keep reading because there is a happy ending.

This story not only teaches about how to deal with loss but also how to rebuild. Rachelle’s personal experience of living through a devastating hurricane is felt through the lives of her characters Kenny and Allison. She shows you what life is like, before and after the storm.

Rex Schneider did a wonderful job illustrating this story. His illustrations give you the feel of the 60’s and show how magnificent a child’s imagination can be.

So, how has Rachelle taken this book beyond reading? She has many activity pages such as coloring pages, crossword puzzle, a maze and a teacher’s guide to name a few. Her teacher’s guide is a great way for a teacher or parent to help children understand natural disasters in a fun way how to handle them.

Pop over to Rachelle’s web site to see all the activities and more.

Where can you buy Rachelle’s book?

Book of the Week: Frankie, the Walk ‘n Roll Dog Activity Book by Barb Techel

This week’s book follows the picture book “Frankie the Walk ‘n Roll Dog” Barb Techel wrote about her dog Frankie. Back in April I did a review on it. You can read it here.

With her book, Barb took it beyond reading right away by visiting children and spreading Frankie's message of hope. Now she’s come out with this fabulous activity book to go even further beyond reading.

Frankie starts off her book saying "Always be positive and keep on rolling!" There are also several pictures of Frankie at the beginning and end of the book.

Barb has lots of fun activities for children to do and learn more about challenges, dreams and happiness. Fill your young ones time with word searches, story telling, coloring pages and much more.

At the end of the book, Frankie has an Achievement Award for finishing all the activities. Oh, and it has Frankie's paw print too.

Where can you buy these two books?

Book of the Week: Anna Mae Mysteries: The Golden Treasure by L.S. Cauldwell

Today I'm happy to share a great historical fiction book with all of you. The Golden Treasure is the first in a series that shows lots of promise.

* * * * *
Her's my review:

Anna Mae Mysteries: The Golden Treasure by L.S. Cauldwell

Anna Mae, her brother Malcolm and her best friend Raul are on their way to school after what seemed like a very short summer. Strange things start happening; a ginger root that appears to be alive, a floating black fist and alphabet soup are a few of the pieces of the mystery Anna Mae has been chosen to solve. But how can a 7th grader solve the mystery of the Jefferson Davis gold theft that’s stumped adults since 1865? What does the gift she inherited from her grandmother have to do with it? Follow along on this challenging mystery and learn a bit about American history at the same time.

L. S. Cauldwell has done a superb job bringing together history and exciting fiction. She’s done her research and walks you through what happened to the Jefferson Davis gold that mysteriously disappeared while being transported through Lincoln County. She has added a bibliography and questions that help all who read her book learn more about that time in history.

Anna Mae Mysteries: The Golden Treasure is a good book for either summer reading or to supplement classroom studies about the Civil War and Jefferson Davis.
* * * * *
So, let's look at all the things L.S. Cauldwell has done to take this book beyond reading. First she gives us some back ground information at the beginning of the book about the story behind her story. She also has a map for you to follow along the path taken back in Civil War times and today.

Then at the end of the story, we learn about the free black men who fought on the Confederate side of the war. The book also introduces some Spanish words and she has a glossary in the back so you can learn some basic Spanish. If that's not enough, there is a full bibloigraphy incase you want to learn more and a great list of questions a parent, teacher or group of friends might use to discuss the book further. She even gives you her email address so you cna send your answers to her.

I'd say Ms. Cauldwell did an excellent job at taking her book beyond reading. Wouldn't you agree?

So, where you can buy this great book?

Borders.com

I'll be back on Wednesday with a few great summer sites for children to learn about history.

Book of the Week: “N is For Nature” by Tim Magner

I really enjoy reviewing children books. I get to see what others are putting out there for children to learn from. Today’s book is no exception. This is the third book by Tim Magner I’ve reviewed. All three deal with awareness of our planet and going green. Here’s my review for today.
* * * * *

What a clever way to teach the ABC’s. “N is for Nature” takes you on a journey around planet earth in a fun and imaginative way. You will not only learn your ABC’s, you will also learn about the Amazon, Great Apes, reptiles and more. Whether it’s animals, insects or habitats, it’s all part of nature.

Mike Nudelman is the incredibly talented illustrator of this book. His art brings the book to life. Each time you read through “N is for Nature” you’ll see something new.
* * * * *

So, how does Tim take his book beyond reading? Starting on page one he opens worlds to be explored and gets you in the mood to do just that.

You can go over to Green Sugar Press and download a coloring book. It’s 27 pages of alphabet coloring fun.

He also has a resource page with links to help you and your children go green.

If you’re interested in learning more about going green, Green Sugar Press has a Grown-up Bookshelf with all kinds of books about nature and how to preserve and use it to the fullest.

Pop over and buy your copy today.

See you all back here Wednesday when I’ll share what’s new over at Laughing Zebra – Books for Children. We are planning a fun and exciting summer. Don’t miss reading all about it.

Book of the Week: Sam Feels Better Now by Jill Osborne

This week’s book, “Sam Feels Better Now” is written by Jill Osborne and illustrated by Kevin Collier.

Sam is a young boy who has been scared by an awful thing. With the help of Ms. Carol, Sam learns how to handle his feelings about this awful thing that scared him and how to feel better.

Jill has done an outstanding job in relating to childhood traumas. With the use of this book, therapists can help children slowly get through traumatic events they have experienced. The book can be used as a tool to help a therapist lead a child down the path to recovery. There are many interactive pages in the book, for example, “draw a picture of something awful or scary”. These pages allow a child to express them self in a non- threatening way. At the end of the book, Jill gives guidelines for therapists who are using this book to help a child deal with their trauma.

Kevin’s art depicts how Sam feels and allows the child using the book to express their own feelings as well.

This book is a very good example of how authors and illustrators team up to take a book beyond reading.

“Earl the Earthworm Digs for His Life” by Tim Magner and illustrated by Lindsay Knapp

Today we have another one of Tim Magner’s books to share with you. This one is all about earthworms.

What do we know about earthworms? Come meet Earl. Earl is an earthworm who’s just been born and is trying to figure out just what it is that he’s supposed to do to contribute to the world. He sees bees, grass, ants and trees and knows he is different. When he realizes what his job is he is happy and loves to do it. What? DIG. “An Environmental Guide from A to Z” by Tim Magner and illustrated by Aubri Vincent-Barwood

Do you like nature? Come with the author of this book on a journey into nature and learn all kinds of things along the way. Travel from your back yard to Kilimanjaro and the Amazon, even into outer space and below the ocean. Each letter of the alphabet is brimming with information as you explore our environment. Learn also about people who have helped improve our world and how you too can help.

The beautiful watercolor illustrations show our world and all it has to offer. Look for the leaves on each page. They list interesting facts and many have ideas of things you can do at home, in the classroom or in your community.

This book goes beyond reading at many levels. The information provided encourages you to dig deeper and do some research on your own. For example, one question asked is “What happens to rain water when it lands in a city? How about when it lands in a forest?” This is a fun way for a child to discover and learn about things in the world they live in.

Book of the Week: Kindergarten Sudoku by Peter and Nicola Kattan

Kidergarten Sudoku by Peter and Nicola Kattan is a great way to learn sudoku.

Kindergarten Sudoku is a fun easy way to learn sudoku. Instead of 9x9 adult sudoku square puzzles, you have 4x4 square puzzles. There are several different varieties of the game incorporated in the book as well. There’s Classic - with numbers, Alphabet – with letters, Animal – with cats, dogs and fish, Shapes – basic shapes of circles, squares, triangles and stars and Symbols – sun, smiley face, heart and the universal symbol for “no”.
The book starts with basic instructions and terminology and of course the rules of sudoku. There are also several step by step ‘show and tell’ type puzzles that walk you through how to play this game.

There are easy, medium and hard puzzles, just like in adult sudoku books. All the answers to all the puzzlesa are at the back of the book. There is also a score sheet and a page to write notes.

A very entertaining way to teach your youngster deductive reasoning, which is after all what sudoku is all about. Also, if you’ve ever tried sudoku but didn’t quite get it (like me) this book will even help you learn the art of doing sudoku too.

This book is available right here fron Amazon.

Book of the Week: “Professor Horace, Cryptozoologist” by Kevin Collier.

This weeks book is an adventure in "Cryptozoology." What's that you ask?

According to Wikipedia:

Cryptozoology (from Greek κρυπτός, kriptos, "hidden" + zoology; literally, "study of hidden animals") is the study of and search for animals which fall outside of contemporary zoological catalogs. It consists of two primary fields of research:
*The search for living examples of animals taxonomically identified through fossil records which are considered to be extinct.

*The search for animals that fall outside of taxonomic records due to a lack of empirical evidence, but for which anecdotal evidence exists in the form of myths, legends, or undocumented sightings.

So, how do you make that into a fun and interesting picture book? Leave it to Kevin Collier and he'll find a way.

In this book, Professor Horace is curious about creatures of legends and myths. He sets out on a grand adventure to see if he can find any of these creatures. I won’t spoil the story, but it’s a wild ride he takes you on.
The illustrations are great, as are all of Kevin’s books. They draw you in and really add to the story with all the extra things that are in them.

How does this book go beyond reading? At the back of the book, Kevin created an index. All the mythical creatures in the story are indexed by the pages they appear on as well as a few sentences about the origins of each of them.

Where can you get this great book? You can find it at:

Guardian Angel Publishing

Check out Professor Horace’s web page and learn even more about all those mythical creatures in the book and also learn about cryptozoology.

Kevin is donating all the proceeds from sales of the book to his son’s school, St. John’s Lutheran School. So pop over to either Guardian Angel Publishing or Amazon and pick up your copy today.

Book of the Week: Frankie the Walk and Roll Dog by Barbara Techel

This week’s book is a great one for animal lovers. Here is a review I wrote:

Frankie the walk ‘n roll dog, what a trooper

“Hi, my name is Frankie! Welcome to my life.” is how Frankie the walk ‘n roll dog begins. Frankie starts her life like any other dog, running around, playful and happy. Adopted by a loving couple, she goes on bike rides to the market, plays with her dog sister and friends and sleeps in a cozy warm bed. She has a wonderful life. Then a tragic accident happens that makes poor Frankie paralyzed in her hind legs. Does she hide her tail between her legs and give up on life? No. She goes on to teach us all how to overcome obstacles and disabilities that get thrown at us.

Written from the point of view of Frankie, the author has done a very good job showing us what it’s like to be stricken with a disability later in life. The story walks you step by step through Frankie’s ordeal. The illustrations by Victoria Kay Lieffring depict the story with bold colors and make you ‘see’ what the story tells. The fears and frustrations little Frankie experiences are expressed in a way that children will be able to understand.

This charming story will be a wonderful addition to any child’s library.

* * * * *
Okay, Barb is coming out with an activity book to go along with hand in hand with Frankie, the Walk 'N Roll Dog. It’s due out June 1, 2009 and will be packed with word searches, crossword puzzles, mazes, coloring pages and a few writing exercises. They both promote these messages:

Always be positive!
Never give up hope!
Be compassionate!
Follow your heart!
Treat others with kindness!
Believe in yourself!
Be an inspiration to others!
Choose happiness!

Here are a few facts about both the book and Frankie herself.

Books of the Week: The Junior Geography Detective Squad Series by Elysabeth Eldering

Today I have a fun and inovative book. How much do you know about the different states in the union? I know I'm rusty on my facts as I studied the US many years ago.

Elysabeth is in the process of developing this great series of 50 books to teach our children, and us, all about each state and all US territories like Puerto Rico.

Here is her synopsis of these most interesting books:

Matt Patterson, Guy Lombard, Mary Beth Patterson and Jolene Ariette take on the newest handheld game to help them in their study of social studies course of US History (geography and trivia information about each state). Each book in the series will be presented as the game giving them "clues" which are basically facts and trivia information that can be found most any place about the states. The kids have to guess the state by the end of the book. Readers are encouraged to participate in guessing as well. Guesses may be changed during the story as no one is expected to get the state immediately. Some clues are more helpful than others and some are just downright fun. This is a fun way of learning something you never knew about state history and geography.

There are bonus clues to five territories throughout the series, one per book with a total of ten per each of the territory (Guam, Washington, DC, Puerto Rico, US Virgin Islands, US Samoan Islands). The ten clues will not come consecutively; the five territories will be one clue every sixth book for each of the territories. There will be a bonus clue section at the end of the series, recapping the clues, which book they appeared in and what the territory is in that book.

Teacher's guides are available through special order from 4RV Publishing. They are available only as a PDF download. The teacher's guides will contain six research projects/discussion questions, a science experiment based on one of the clues in the book (where possible), a secret message puzzle (cryptogram, word search, scramble or other such puzzles alternating per state), and an end of book quiz (about fifteen per book - a mixture of multiple choice, fill-in-the-blank, and True/False questions).
* * *
I've looked at the first one and it's very complete. What a great way to learn about our country, and if you're not in the US this is a great way for you to learn about it too.

Book of the Week: No More Gunk by Donna Shepherd illustrated by Kevin Collier

Today I have a fun picture book that’s two stories in one book. First we have “No More Gunk” and then “OUCH! Sunburn”

Here are what Reviewers have to say:
Humorous, rhyming prose with funny artwork gets a high five, especially when coupled with a second free book! - Gayle Jacobson-Huset, Assistant Editor -- Stories for Children Magazine

A Valuable Mixture of FUN and Practical - Some books for children from ages 4 to 8 are just fun to read--over and over. NO MORE GUNK combines fun with practical. Parents are able to help their children understand the value of consistently brushing their teeth and removing gunk. The snappy rhymes combine with vivid illustrations from Kevin Collier and the combination is irresistible. While not evident on the front cover, you get two books for the price of one with this title. OUCH SUNBURN! teaches the danger from the sun and how small children can protect themselves. Simple thoughtful words combine with terrific artwork. If you have small children, this book could become a read aloud favorite. - Terry Whalin, Agent, Editor, Writer

* * * * *
Donna has taken both stories beyond reading with her tips sheet after each story ends. This is a great book for young children and a wonderful teaching tool for their parents.

Book of the Week: Andy and the Albino Horse by Mary Jean Kelso illustrated by K.C. Sinder

Today’s story is one of struggle and triumph. Andy is a young boy who spends his days in a wheelchair. He feels different that all the other children in school and is the school bullies favorite target. Andy wishes he could stand up and walk, then maybe Billy the bully would leave him alone.

In another part of town there is a lady named Tracy. She’s a horse trainer. During a severe winter she encounters an albino filly who’s been shunned by the rest of her herd because she’s different. Eventually the Bureau of Land Management puts the filly up for adoption and Tracy adopts her. She trains the filly, named Sprit, and Andy’s mom brings him out one day to ride her.

I won’t give away the ending, but this story teaches us that even though someone is different they still have feelings and dreams like everyone else. This is the first in a series of Andy and Sprit adventures.

Mary Jean takes this book beyond reading in several ways. At the back of the book she has “Horse Safety Tips” which anyone interested in being around horses should read. There is also a list of web sites that deal with wild horses. I think the most interesting part of this mini study guide is the last two pages. There Mary Jean talks about horse body language, or ear magic as she calls it. She has pictures of horse heads with different ear positions and explanations for each. Like for example if a horse’s ears are drooping downward or straight out to the side this may indicate that the horse is bored, tired or possibly in pain.

You can follow Mary Jane at her blog Andy and the Albino Horse

Book of the Week: Rainbow Sheep by Kim Chatel

Today I have a beautiful storybook to share with you. "Rainbow Sheep" by Kim Chatel.

Genevieve is a shepherdess high up on a hill. It’s been raining for days. Everything is soggy, wet and miserable. Genevieve’s had enough and goes up to the top of her hill to make the sun shine through. When she does she finds a tattered, sad rainbow. She tells the rainbow all about her sheep, the land and the sea.

Can Genevieve make the rainbow happy? Why do her sheep turn colors, all the colors of the rainbow?

This adorable story is one you can read over and over again to your children. Genevieve, I mean Kim has a wonderful way of telling stories that your children will love.

Kim’s art work with wool is creative and innovative. She has a true talent at felting. She takes this book beyond reading with including directions on making your own sheep out of felt. She tells you all about felting, what to use and how to make felted soap and a needle felted sheep.

Here is a video of how to make your own sheep. It’s long, but by the end you too can make a felted sheep.

Part two is over on You Tube.

Over at Kim’s website you can find lots more fun things to do.

You can get your copy at:
