Tip #7 Science Fun

Does your story take place in winter? Africa? A zoo? Use the location or time of year to create a science project. For example, if your story takes place in winter, ask questions like:
· Why does it snow in winter?
· Does it snow everywhere in winter?
· Is it winter all over the world at the same time?

Look it up on the internet, the library or books you have around the house or classroom. Have the children discuss what they think the reason is and then look it up together.

Does your story take place at the zoo? Go on a field trip to the local zoo. Don’t have one? Then create your own zoo by cutting out pictures from magazines or draw pictures of zoo animals. Discuss where they come from and look up interesting facts about their favorites.

Okay, so this is more than one tip. Take it and run with it. Remember, have fun, make learning exciting and it will rub off on your children and students. See you next time.

Joy, hadn't ever thought of doing that sort of thing before. Great tip! My kids are pretty much grown, but there are grandkids sprouting up, and I'm thinking of using some version of this when I do book events in bookstores, libraries and schools.

Thanks Katie. My kids are grown too. I just love coming up with ideas that are fun and sneek learning in at the same time. Let me know how it goes at your events.

Thanks for this re science. I once accidentally had the moon going through the wrong phases, and only one reader finally caught it!

Thanks for stopping by. I'm glad you all are having fun learning new ways to take books beyond reading.
