Taking a Book Beyond Reading in Reverse

Do you collect shells, stamps or baseball cards?
Do you like to go bird watching, whale watching or watching the space shuttle launch ?
How about sports. Are you into basketball, soccer or football?

If you said yes to any of these categories, why not invite your child to share in your passion?

For example, I love to snorkel and collect shells. I can share these fun activities with my grand children. When we get home, we can pull out books on shells and tropical fish. From what we saw and collected, we can now use a book to find out what type of shells we collected and what kinds of fish we saw.

Don’t have a book? Hop on the internet and do a search together. There’s no telling what you’ll dig up.

Enjoy this summer with your children, share a hobby and take a book beyond reading in reverse.

Tip #7 Science Fun

Does your story take place in winter? Africa? A zoo? Use the location or time of year to create a science project. For example, if your story takes place in winter, ask questions like:
· Why does it snow in winter?
· Does it snow everywhere in winter?
· Is it winter all over the world at the same time?

Look it up on the internet, the library or books you have around the house or classroom. Have the children discuss what they think the reason is and then look it up together.

Does your story take place at the zoo? Go on a field trip to the local zoo. Don’t have one? Then create your own zoo by cutting out pictures from magazines or draw pictures of zoo animals. Discuss where they come from and look up interesting facts about their favorites.

Okay, so this is more than one tip. Take it and run with it. Remember, have fun, make learning exciting and it will rub off on your children and students. See you next time.

Tip #2 Post reading discussion questions

Here’s a way to see if your child or student understood the story (and was paying attention). After you’ve read the story, come up with a few questions you can ask your child or student to get them thinking about what they just heard. Using “Zooprise Party / Fiesta Zoorpresa” again, here are a few of the post discussion questions in the teacher’s guide:

* Why do you think Mori is so sad?
* Would you be sad if your friends didn’t wish you a Happy Birthday?
* What animals are hiding in Mori’s exhibit?

Reading and learning can be fun!

In this day and age there are many resources available to make learning easy and fun. This blog’s purpose is to explore different ways to do just that. To start things off, I’m going to share one tip or idea a day of things you can do to take a book, any book, beyond reading and have fun at the same time. I’m aiming for 30 tips, let’s see if I make it.
