Book of the Week: Wright on Time Utah (book 2) by Lisa Cottrell-Bentley

I’m back from a 2 week hiatus and am recharged and ready for the new year. I hope all of you are ready for a great 2010.

My format here is going to change a bit. I still will be doing reviews on books that go beyond reading. The rest of my posts will deal with a combination of different ways to use books, creative writing prompts and news on the multi-lingual front. In this last one I might even include some basic words, customs, games and fun things from around the world. I hope you all follow along this year and enjoy the ride.

So, let’s kick this year’s Book of the Week off with the second book in the “Wright on Time” series. “Utah”, book 2. It is every bit as action packed as Lisa’s first book, “Arizona”.

This time the Wright family has traveled to the state of Utah. They’re helping out at an Allosaurus dinosaur dig. Aidan is trying hard to find a new bone at the dig. Nadia gets some new surprises from her mysterious device. The symbols state changing and glowing in the night. Just what is this thing? What are the changing symbols that look Mayan, Chinese, Egyptian and Native American? Also, what’s going on with Aidan’s teeth?

I like the way Lisa’s books not only are very fun adventure stories, they also teach and encourage you to want to learn more about the subject, in this case dinosaurs and hieroglyphics of different ancient civilizations.

As with her first book, Lisa takes this book beyond reading with the two page spread of Utah facts at the front of the book. At the end of the story there are more Utah facts, a glossary, a contest and a peak at book number three “Wyoming.”

Creative Wednesday: What Can You Make of This?

This morning while I was thinking of ideas for today's post, I came up with three different ways to get your creative juices flowing. For the next three weeks I'll be giving you started ideas you can use and of course I'd love you to share what you come up with in the comments.

Let's get started:

Since it's Christmas time, look at the three pictures below and write a story through the eyes of a child or elderly person who's reminiscing about what you see here. Make this a flash fiction of no more than 100 words.

Book of the Week: Wright on Time Arizona (book 1) by Lisa Cottrell-Bentley

Today I'd like to share what will prove to be a great series of mid grade adventure books. The books are about the Wright family. Dad, Harrison and mom, Stephanie are taking their two children 7 year old Aidan and 11 year old Nadia on an RV trip around the United States. They will be home schooled as well as get to see up close and personal the entire country.

The first book takes place in Arizona. The Wright's are about to explore one of the many desert caves. Aidan wants to see bats. Nadia wants to see minerals and rock formations. Will Aidan see bats? What kinds of minerals do they find? What mysterious glowing thing is buried in the rocks? You'll have to read the book to find out.

Lisa Cottrell-Bentley's books are a great way to learn about some of the interesting facts each state has to offer. If this book is any indication of what the entire series will be like, we are all in for a fun and interesting ride along with the Wright family.

So how does Lisa take her book beyond reading? In the first pages, there is a two page spread of Arizona facts that are beautifully illustrated by Tanja Bauerle. Things like:
State insect

State mammal

State flower

and more. At the back of the book Lisa has created a six page glossary of terms for young readers to learn a bit more about some of the things mentioned in the story. She also has a preview of the next book "Utah," a write up about the mysterious item they find, more facts about Arizona and a contest for young readers to enter. A Truly Bilingual Program That Works Both Ways

PSJA bilingual program recognized

When I read this article today, I just had to share. Finally, a school district that gets it. They are offering dual language classes from elementary up. The students that graduate from this program are fully bilingual and ready to face the challenges of the world better than most American students.

Right now the program is in English and Spanish. They want to add a third language the program has been so successful.

Kudos to the creators of this program. I really hope more school districts adopt it.

Book of the Week: Soap, Soap, Soap by Elizabeth Dulemba

Today we have a fun book to share with you. "Soap, soap, soap" is both written and illustrated by Elizabeth Dulemba. This is a fun filled bilingual story about Hugo, a young boy. His mamá sends him to the store to buy soap or jabón. Follow Hugo's adventure to the store and see who he meets along the way. Watch out, or you might end up needing a bath by the end of the story.

Elizabeth's illustrations are amazing. Her style really makes you feel like you are running right along side Hugo during his adventure. This is Elizabeth's first book that she both wrote the story and did the illustration. She has done a wonderful job weaving a cute story and illustrations together. All young children will enjoy this book.

Bilingual Crossword Puzzles

When I was creating my activity book to go with "Zooprise Party/Fiesta Zoorpresa", I wanted to include crossword puzzles. they are great learning tools. But how could one be made bilingual?

I could have made two puzzles, one in English and one in Spanish, but that didn't feel to me like it would teach which ever was the second language very well. Then I came up with the idea of having the clues in one language and the answer in the other language. Teachers really liked this idea saying they'd never seen it before.

Creative Wednesday: What Hapened Next?

Have you ever read a book to a child and had them ask you: "What happened next?"

Do you say: they lived happily ever after?
they went to sleep?
or worst of all, nothing the story is over?

So, what did happen next? Did the three little pigs become famous wolf slayers and travel the world? Did little red ridinghood run off to Hollywood and become a star or did she marry the woodsman who saved her?

Next time a child asks you "What happened next?" I challenge you to come up with a new story ending that children will talk about for years to come.

Thanksgiving Holidays From Around the World

I'm going to depart from my normal type of post today in honor of Thanksgiving.

As an American, many of us can get into the thinking that Thanksgiving is only an American celebration. Not so. Many cultures around the world celebrate their own Thanksgiving.

Now, they don't celebrate the same way we do, but they celebrate non the less.

Creative Wednesday: Favorite Food Alphabet

It's safe to say that we all have favorite foods.

I challenge you to come up with a list of foods that you really like. Now, that's not much of a challenge, so, make your list in alphabetical order and list one food item for each letter of the alphabet. The food has to start with the letter, not just have the letter in the word somewhere. If that's too easy, see if you can make the foods rhyme.

Are you doing this with your children? Have them find pictures of the foods and paste them next to the food name.

Have fun with this and please share. I'll share my list next Wednesday and hope some of you have posted comments so I can share your list too.

Now, could you eat them all in one meal? I dare you, no, I double dare you!

Immersion and Dual Language Schooling Is Catching On

Across the United States schools are offering an alternative to single language study. Immersion classrooms are springing up all over. Here are a few articles highlighting different schools in two different states.

FLAG (Foreign Language Academy of Glendale) in Glendale, CA teaches children in Spanish, Armenian, Korean, German and now Italian. This program is working and has been so successful that they were awarded a $2.4 million in federal grant monies.

County schools expand dual-language classes, ESL Assistance

“Research shows that dual language is better for the students,” said Keely Krueger, District 200’s bilingual coordinator. “I think a lot of that reason is [the Spanish-speaking students] do start learning English in kindergarten. And they have those English language models in the classroom.” (Read full article.)

This type of teaching not only benefits those for whom English is a second language, but also for those who it’s their first language and will for a lifetime.
From a personal observation, I speak both English and Spanish. As a demo girl at Sams in Central Florida I have the opportunity to talk with members in their native tongue. It makes them feel more at ease and they always appreciate the effort that I make to speak to them in their first language. As for me, I love having the knowledge of a second language. It enriches my life and has afforded me many opportunities that, if I didn’t speak Spanish, I’d never have experienced.

Have a Great Veterans Day!

As a wife, daughter and mother of military men, I want to dedicate today's post to those who have served our country.

My father was an officer in the Navy. My husband just retired this year from the Coast Guard. My son is an officer in the Coast Guard.

I'm proud, VERY proud of all of them.

Take time today, and every day, to thank those who serve this great nation of ours. I do. If I see someone with a military hat, shirt or uniform on, I always make a point to say to them

"Thank you for serving our country."

They don't hear it enough and it always brings a smile to their face. Those who serve in the military are all volunteers. They made the choice to put their life on the line so we can enjoy the freedoms that we do.

Book of the Week: My Grandma’s Kitchen Rules! By Bill Kirk

Language Magazine - The Journal of Communication and Education

In my Google Alerts for 'bilingual education' today I found a website that intrigues me. Language Magazine. It's a well put together site for world languages.

The home page article grabbed my attention. Two is Always More Than One talks about language and the educational system in America. Read it and see what you think.

Throughout the site you can learn about the countires where English, Spanish, Chinese, French, Italian, German and Arabic are spoken. Study abroad and travel opportunities are available as well as an understanding of where the languages originated and it's use world wide.

If you're a teacher and interested in teaching abroad, this might be the place you'll find your next teaching adventure.

Being Creative; What Does It Mean To You?

When you think of being creative, what comes to mind? Is it writing, drawing, acting, poetry?

I've dabbled in all of the above. Creating a work of art, whether it's a story or something out of fabric makes me smile. For example, I'm a Gator fan. As a demo girl at Sams Club I get to speak to lots of people each day. Since I live in central Florida, there are lots of Gator fans.

Now we have an old plastic gator we rescued after Hurricane Andrew. He's beat up and even missing some toes. Here's what I did with him one afternoon to show my Gator spirit.

GO GATORS!

On Saturdays I bring him to work and set him on my demo cart. As people sample my food, many of them make comments about rescue gator, both gator fans and those who wish they'd lose a game.

Book of the Week: Mommy, Draw Stars on My Tummy by Martine Groeneveld

In honor of my mother's 82nd birthday today, I want to share a book all about interactive play between a parent and young child. Nurturing our children when they are infants, toddlers and beyond is a vital part of parenting. This book is a tool for parents to use at home to instill love and affection through use of touch-play, rhymes, games, songs and stories.

“Positive touch plays a major role in my family. Besides daily hugs and kisses, many activities are easily combined with loving and playful touch. We enjoy touch-play activities in the car, in line at the grocery store and before bedtime. They can be done anywhere and anytime.”

The layout is wonderful. In each section you are given guidance on how to use touch-play and tips to involve your child in the process. For example:
Everything in this book goes beyond reading. Martine starts the book with an introduction to touch-play and how to use it with your child, She continues with notes for parents about types of oils to use, pressure and stroking, clothing and timing. At the end of the book she goes into the benefits of touch and research that’s been done on brain development and how it helps reduce aggression. She also gives you a list of resources and books that can further your knowledge.

Reading through this book brought back memories of when my children were very young. I was involved in a “mommy and me” that used these same types of touch-play in a group setting. When we’d go home, we’d continue the experience and make up new songs and rhymes. This would be a great gift for anyone that’s going to have a child.

Creative Thinking Wednesday

I'm taking a new approach to Wednesday. Many call Wednesday 'hump day' because it's in the middle of the week. I want to turn you, my loyal readers, onto your creative brain power.

So, how will I do this? Each week I'll have something new for you to ponder. Could be a picture,a prompt to get your writing flowing, a puzzle or maybe even a fun craft idea.

How do these things take books beyond reading, you ask? Simple. Each of the ideas I post can be used with your favorite book, mainly children's books, but who knows, you might be able to use some with your favorite sci-fi or romance novel too.

The idea is to have fun. Take a few minutes out of your day and let your mind wander into that creative area that wants to express itself.

Here's what I picked for today. I spent several years recently in the Caribbean living on a sail boat. Several times a week I went snorkeling with friends. I fell in love with undersea life. So much so that I bought a simple underwater camera. My time snorkeling was spent taking hundred of pictures and even some short movie clips. Here are some of the many pictures I took. They were taken one after the other.

Book of the Week: Andy and Spirit in the Big Rescue by Mary Jean Kelso

This week’s story is the third in the Andy and Sprit stories. Once again Andy and Spirit show what a great team they make.

We are back at the State Fair. It’s the day after Andy won the ‘Grand Champion’ ribbon in the 4-H riding competition. He and his mom have stayed over to see the rest of the fair and see how the other 4-H clubs do in their competitions.

Tracy, Spirit’s owner, has promised a ride around the tents to show Andy all the 4-H animals and the rest of the livestock that’s at the fair. When they arrive at the rodeo arena, Andy is watching a girl practicing barrel racing when suddenly one of the bulls breaks down the gate to his pen. The bull races after the girl and her horse then takes off out of the arena chasing Spirit, Andy and Tracy. When they reach the barn, the bull and Billy (the school bully) enter it at the same time. Will Billy be hurt? Will Spirit be hurt? See what happens and how Andy and Spirit save the day.

Mary Jean has once again done a wonderful job portraying the love between horse and boy. Her imagery brings you to the fair and makes you feel like you’re riding with Andy. K.C.’s illustrations show you all the action in this thrilling story.

What Makes You Creative?

For me it's lots of different things. Something as simple as seeing the eyes of an alligator peeking out of a retention pond at me while I'm doing my morning walk sparks the beginning of a poem.

I looked at a pond and what did I see?
Alligator eyes looking at me.

Watching me slowly as I walked by,
Do you think they'll make me cry?

They didn't move, not even a blink,
I snuck on by, as quick as a wink.

Will they follow me, will they try?
I sure hope not, so I'll say bye bye.

Okay, so it's not the best, but I think you get the idea.

Muse Online Writers Conference Wrap Up

Last week was a whirl wind of information. I participated in about 5 workshops and popped intp over 20 others, commenting once in a while.

The greatest thing I've gone away with each of the three years I've attended is a new sense of awareness of the writer in me. This year I:

dabbled in suspense,
perfected writing dialogue,
assaulted my senses,
learned how to use social media better,
learned more about writing for kids of all ages and
started writing a historical fiction book for mid graders.

Now that all the fun is over, it's time to take all I learned and put it to use.

Before I go, here's one idea to get your creative writing juices flowing.

Look around the room you're in right now.
Focus on one thing in the room.
Write about it. How does it make you feel, memories it brings back, any aspects about that item that you can see. Write until you're done, let it take you whereever your mind goes.

Here's mine:

A picture of me almost 30 years ago is stuck to the bulkhead on Julio’s side of the bed. I am sitting at a table on the outside patio at the sanitarium where we met.

It was the day of the luau I held for the patients. I’m dressed in my signature type of clothing from back then: a puffy white-sleeved blouse with a pink and black flowered vest I’d made over it and a long full flowing skit that matches the vest. I have a pink plastic lay around my neck. My hair lies in soft curls on my shoulders and it’s tied up with barrettes that have pink hibiscus stuck in them.

It looks like I’m eating ice cream and really enjoying it. On the table in front of me is a plate with a piece of cake. Behind me, in the window, I see the face of one of the male patients peeking out. I wonder who he is, looks like Stanley. I remember that my best friends Ann and Nola came that day to help me serve the cake and ice cream after the patients broke open the piñata.

Thinking of the piñata, I remember how when it was Marianne’s turn, she whacked me in the head, knocking me on the ground. She ran to her room shouting “I’m sorry, I’m sorry!” When I could walk, I went to her room to show her I was okay. Opening the door, she spat out, “I wish I would have killed you.” (She had a crush on Julio and we had just gotten married a few months beforehand.)

All these years later, I don’t know what happened to Marianne, Ann and I still keep in touch, I’m still married to Julio and Nola passed away a few years later from cancer. Life sure is interesting.

Book of the Week: “An Environmental Guide from A to Z” by Tim Magner Revisited

Back in May I reviewed this book. I’m revisiting it today because Tim and his staff have added more ways to take this book beyond reading.

First he’s added a Parent’s Guide. The 14 page guide “promotes outdoor activity necessary for healthy childhood development. It gives children a chance to bond with and understand nature, a chance to become excited about and
involved in the places we live. Uncovering the secrets of nature, opens opportunities in transforming how we live-—from changing where energy is derived to how products are made.”

The book is divided into 3 sections.
Where do we live? Who lives with us?
How does it work?
How do we protect our places, keep them working and build a better future?
Each section is filled with activity ideas, detective questions, writing activites and section one has map activities as well.

This is a wonderful addition to “An Environmental Guide from A to Z” and a great way for parent and child to study the world they live in. My children are grown and off involved in their own careers, but, I plan to use this book for my own learning and pleasure.

The second book is a well thought out and comprehensive Teacher’s Guide. Written for the state of Illinos, this can be adapted to any state with a few changes. Starting with pre-reading questions and ending with post-reading discussion the students will get a real feel for the essence of this book. Going through every letter in the alphabet, there are ‘Be a detective’ questions and a wide variety of activities for teacher and students to do. For example here is a sampling from questions and activities for one section.
H is for Habitat and N is for Nature
Be a Detective general questions:
• Why are maps important? What are they used for? How do we “read” maps?
• Are the plants and animals living near us, native to the area? Why? If not, how did they arrive and
what is the impact?

Activities
4. Native American Story: In conjunction with researching pre-European history in America and the prairie-lands of the Midwest, write a story as a Native American child five hundred years ago, e.g. “A Day in the Life,” or, “A Year in the Life.” Describe their relationship among local resources?

8. Need vs. Want: All our needs, including air, water, food and shelter, are met. What members of the community have unmet needs? What is it like to feel cold, hungry, thirsty or lonely? As a person? As a wild animal? Have students choose animals to act out. After the drama ask the student to explain why the animal felt that way. Note: the “L is for Lugari” contains a Need vs. Want exercise.

I believe these books are excellent ways to take a book beyond reading and very good ones to have for anyone interested in studying the environment they live in.

Book of the Week: U.N.I.Q.U.E. Kids by Debra J.Slover

This week we have a different kind of book for you. The full title is “U.N.I.Q.U.E. Kids Growing My Leadership Garden.” The concept of this book in the author’s words:

U.N.I.Q.U.E. KIDS: Growing My Leadership Garden

Written for 8–12 year-olds, the story is a fable of the lost
sheep, Hugh. Representing the human heart, mind, and
spirit, he wanders onto the Leadership Farm. There, he

Debra has skillfully woven together a fable children will enjoy and understand with some very powerful lessons. All children need to learn the skills taught in this book to develop and have a fulfilling life.

This book goes beyond reading in several ways. First, at the end of each chapter there is a section called “Hugh Wants To Know.” Here there are discussion questions, writing activities and /or an activity to complete. This helps bring home what lessons were taught in that chapter. Next is the Activity Guide. This reinforces the lessons in the book through further discussion and fun activities for the children. There also is a listing of the Oregon Standards that are met by each chapter.

The book is…tada…”Green Eggs and Ham by Dr. Seuss. I just love that book, Sam I am. As a kid it was my favorite story to read. “Not in a box, not in a box, not with a fox, not in a house, not with a mouse.” Just love that book.

Why? Because it will make you smile!!!

Day 3 of the Great Books Week

I’m participating in the “Great Books Week” a few days this week. Today’s topic is:

I'd write my autobiography, but I don't need to, because my story has already been told in...

I gave this some deep thought and decided that “Harry Potter” would be nice, at least the part of having magic at my fingertips. Then I thought, what about “Mary Poppins” or “The Wizard of OZ.” I guess with all that said, I’d like some magical powers.

Then I switched gears and thought of the things I wanted to do when I grew up and hit on Martha Graham (I used to dance) and Edith Head. (I actually did do some costume designing in Key West, but that’s another story.)

When it comes right down to it, I will have to write my own autobiography. I realize I might be like (in part) or want to be like many famous people, but in reality, I’m just me. And you know what, that’s not so bad.

Book of the Week: The Traveler’s Trunk by Amanda Litz

This week’s book is an incredible journey into the imagination of young children.

Sierra, Jacob and Brent are visiting their great-grandma’s house with their parents. Great- Grandma Addy loves to tell the children stories about great adventures about far off places. After another wonderful story about how she saved a naval ship from pirates, Great-Grandma Addy send the children off to play while she takes a rest.

In their exploration, Sierra finds a rope hanging down from the ceiling. What do they find? What great adventure do the three children have? You’ll have to read this fast paced beginner chapter book to find out what happens.

Amanda has really done an excellent job bringing this story to life. It will peak your child’s (or you own) sense of imagination. Do you have a reluctant reader in your house? This book will grab their attention. I can’t wait to read more stories in this series by Amanda Litz.

So, how has she taken this book beyond reading? I really had fun with all Amanda’s done. First off, at the end of the story she invites her readers to send in their own stories. Not sure what to write about? No problem. There’s a “fill in the blanks story” for you to use. These are fun and can have many different stories come from them. Oh, she also has a permission slip in the book for child and parent to fill out before she’ll post on her web site. Great idea! But that’s not all. Amanda has a 42 page activity book filled with fun activities like coloring pages, word searches and puzzles. These will keep your child occupied for hours and help them relive the experience of “The Traveler’s Trunk.”

Hidden Picture Pages

I love hidden picture pages, don't you? I really enjoy trying to find all the things hidden inside, and maybe even that aren't marked as hidden.

I've searched the internet and found a few good sites for them.

First we have a page from Highlights Magazine. Lots of free downloadable pictures that will keep you busy for hours.

Another really cool hidden picture page from Highlights. This one is interactive. Kids will love this one. Oh, and there are three different levels with each picture. Level 1 is the typical one. Pictures off to the side. Level 2 you have to find the picture of printed word shown. Level 3 is a blind hunt. In other words, no clues!

Last we have Liz Ball. I really like her hidden pictures. I download them and fill them in in Photoshop.

I decided I wanted to try my hand at making one to go with my book. Here it is. Let me know what you think of it for a first attempt.

Book of the Week: the No-No Boys by Teresa Funke

A few weeks ago I shared Teresa’s first book, “Doing My Part” with you. This week’s book is the second in her World War II series.

Once again Teresa has done an outstanding job weaving fiction and fact together. As I read her book, I could feel what life in an internment camp must have been like. The pride of the Japanese culture is beautifully portrayed through the lives of Tai’s parents, relatives and other families in the camp. The emotions of being a teen in troubled times are brought forward as Tai struggles with wanting to do the right thing both for his parents and his big brother Ben who’s become one of the No-No boys.

Thought Teresa’s books you will learn about what life was like during World War II in a way you won’t learn in a history book. She’s done a wonderful job reaching into the lives of her characters, real and fictional, to show us all a piece of American history.

How does Teresa take her book beyond reading? At the end of the story, Teresa introduces you to the people whom the story is based on. She give insight into life back in the 1940’s, has a glossary of the Japanese words that were used throughout the story and has the questions 27 and 28 of the “War Department’s War Relocation Authority Loyalty Questionnaire” that helped separate those who were loyal from those who were not.

In addition to all that, she has kits made up for homes schooling, book clubs and classroom study. You can read about them at Bailiwick Press. These kits help students and adults alike experience more about our great American history and pride in our country.

Book of the Week: Andy and Spirit Go To the Fair by Mary Jean Kelso

This is the second story in the Andy and Spirit series. Back in March I reviewed the first in the series where Andy and Spirit met. You can read it here.

In this week’s story, Andy has joined a 4-H club called the Dusty Riders. Andy and several other members of the club are competing at the State Fair for ribbons. He’s very excited about being at the fair, even though he doesn’t think he’s the best rider in the group.

When the time comes for the competition to start, Andy’s a bit nervous. He’s used to working Spirit with his friends around, but this is different. When it’s his turn, Billy, the school bully, yells out from the crowd and lets out a shrill pitched whistle. Will Spirit react and run off with Andy on her back? How does the competition end? I don’t want to spoil the story for you, so I’ll just say that Andy and Spirit prove what a great pair they are.

Mary Jean has once again done an excellent job sharing the experiences of horse and rider and the bond they form. She shows how having a handicap doesn’t have to keep you from doing the things you want to do. The illustrations by K. C. Snider let you see and experience being at the fair with Andy.

This book goes beyond reading with the added information at the end about how wild horses are managed in the U. S. and horse adoption. Mary Jean also gives you some insight to 4-H clubs which have been around for over 100 years.

European Study that Proves Preschoolers Can Learn a Second Language

“Interim results from an international research project which looks at bilingual education reveal that children can learn a second language as early as preschool.”

It seems these days there is more and more talk about teaching young children a second language. Here is another report, this one comes from the University of Hertfordshire. Read about the study they did at six preschools around Europe.

CD To Enhance Story Time

I’ve been thinking about including a CD of my book, “Zooprise Party / Fiesta Zoorpresa” to go along with a bundle I’m creating of our book and activity book. I’d read the story in both English and Spanish and using a sticky back CD sleeve, stick it in the back of the book.

It got me thinking, why couldn’t any parent out there create CDs of their children’s favorite story. Here’s a senario I’m sure we are all too familiar with:

Okay, you’ve read your child’s favorite book 10 times in a row every night for the past week. She’s memorized it to the point that she corrects you when you say the story a little bit different. You dream the story every night. What can you do?

Create your own CD. What? Yes, create a CD with your voice reading your child’s favorite story to them. This way they can listen to it even when you’re not around.

Okay, how? Most computers these days have all you need to create a personalized recording. Search through all that software that comes loaded on your computer, it’s bound to be there somewhere. On mine it’s under the Accessories and called, simple enough, “Sound Recorder.” All I have to do is start talking. Be sure when you save the file you know where it is on your computer! I’ve lost a few that way.

Now, put in a blank CD and again search for whatever software your computer has that will burn your recording onto a CD. Click a few keys and you’re done.

Now your child can listen to their favorite story with your voice whenever they want.

So, what do you think? Also, if a book already came with a CD, would that factor into your decision on whether you bought it or not? I’d love some feedback on this question.Thanks for stopping by, and I’ll see you back here Wednesday.

Make Your Own Worksheets

Okay, so you found a book that your child loves. They want to have you read it over and over again.

Now what? You can do arts and crafts that go with the story, bake cookies in the shape of the main characters, but what if you want to go further? What can you do?

Here's one idea I used during 'Zebee's Summer Zoo Camp' this summer. I created fun word sheet puzzles.

How can I do that, I'm not an artist?

Here are two different ways you can creat your own word puzzles like mine.

1. Start with picking the word you want to use, ie antelope or snake and deciding which type of word puzzle you want to create.

2. Find clip art online. I found mine by doing searches like this:

"public domain clip art of apples"

Up popped a bunch of pictures and I chose the one I liked best.

you can look through magazines and cut out pictures that will work with your puzzle.

3. Now you can print out your pictures and glue them onto a piece of paper or you can open a word document and create one like my Antelope one.

If you want to do one like my snake one, open a spreadsheet to creat your puzzle part. Then pop that into a word document, add your pictures and you're done.

Book of the Week: Doing My Part by Teresa Funke

How much do you remember from history class about World War II? Teresa Funke has written several books on the subject.

TV is a wonderful tool for learning Spanish. If you have cable or satellite TV there are several channels you can watch. Many of them have dubbed Spanish over the English of old time favorites. If you don’t want to watch Spanish channels, there’s always “Sesame Street.” They teach Spanish in a fun and simple way to children.

I learned a lot of my Spanish by watching TV. Growing up in Puerto Rico back before there was cable all our TV viewing was in Spanish. We watched cartoons like “Popeye” and “Felix the Cat” in Spanish. (I know I’m dating myself here.) At night shows like “Bewitched” were on, but they were in Spanish too.

Last year while living in Puerto Rico I was given the opportunity to talk about my bilingual books on a children’s TV program. The interview was done entirely in Spanish, well, except for one part where I couldn’t think of how to say something in Spanish. Let’s watch. (This was filmed by friends of mine who went along for moral support. Neither of them speak Spanish.)

I want to challenge you this week. Check your local listings and find a Spanish TV station. Watch a show or cartoon with your children. See if it helps you learn a few words. That’s all it takes, a few words at a time and you could be speaking Spanish in no time.

Learning Something New

Last night I created a cute felt ladybug. I think I’ll name her Betty.

This morning when I woke up I decided to try something I’ve never done before. I took Betty’s picture, figured out how to blank out the background in Photoshop and then popped her onto a leaf I’d drawn in illustrator. Now I have a photo of Betty on a leaf. Doesn't she look like she's glowing?

Isn’t she cute? Hummm…I wonder what it would be like to create felt and Illustrator pictures for a book…

Zebee's Summer Zoo Camp Wrap-up

I'm sad to say that my eight week summer camp is officially over. I'm keeping the pages live for a while so if you missed out on any of them, feel free to pop over and check them out.

We had lots of fun and learned all kinds of things about:

Meerkat Mania - have fun learning about these adorable creatures

Leaping Lizards - chameleons and iguanas take center stage

Virtuous Vultures - king and egyptian vultures come from opposite sides of the world and really are very interesting creatures

Facinating Frogs - poison dart frogs and African bullfrogs, some of the smallest and biggest frogs with some very strange behaviors

Observant Okapis - are they related to giraffes or zebras?

Playful Penguins - from Antarctica to South Africa, penguins thrive

Slithery Snakes - corn snakes are much loved and king cobras are among the most feared

Amazing Antelope - gerenuks have a unique habit and kudus are strikingly beautiful antelope

I had lots of fun putting on this camp and from the response from the children signed up I think they did too.

Will I do it again next year? I think so, but only for 4 weeks. Eight weeks in retrospect was a bit long.

Book of the Week: Sparkles the Fire Safety Dog by Dayna Hilton

This week I have a very special book/project to share with you.

"Sparkles the Fire Safety Dog" by Dayna Hilton teaches children all about fire safety. Dayna is a firefighter and currently serves as a Public Fire and Life Safety educator in Clarksville, Arkansas.

With the help of father and son who are also firefighters, she developed a complete package of fire safety information that's sure to delight children as it teaches.

Her book walks you trough a day in the life of Sparkles as she helps Dayna teach children fire safety. The photographs in the book show Dayna, her son Michael and Sparkles get ready for the day and how they help children learn what to do in case of a fire.

Dayna has taken this book beyond reading in many ways. First she has an audio CD available where the story is read with and without page turning prompts. There is also a song about Sparkles.

Bilingual Babies - What More and More Parents Beginning to Realize

Here's an exerpt from an article I read. It's timely and very informative for those who are thinking about starting to teach their children a second language.

"Why are so many families jumping on the bilingual bandwagon? "In our increasingly global world, parents realize that their kids will benefit from knowing more than one language," says Nancy Rhodes, director of foreign-language education at the Center for Applied Linguistics, in Washington, D.C. "There's definitely been a grassroots push for more bilingual education in preschools." Exposing your child to a second language will help him learn about other cultures. Research has shown that bilinguals tend to be more creative thinkers than those who speak one language, and one study suggests that their brain functions may stay sharper as they age."

Book of the Week: Tree House in a Storm by Rachelle Burk

This week’s book is about natural disasters, hurricanes to be specific.

Kenny and his sister Allison are growing up in New Orleans back in the 1960’s. Their favorite way to spend the day is up in their tree house they built together. Then along comes hurricane Betsy and not only destroys people’s homes, but also takes down the mighty oak tree where their tree house is. But keep reading because there is a happy ending.

This story not only teaches about how to deal with loss but also how to rebuild. Rachelle’s personal experience of living through a devastating hurricane is felt through the lives of her characters Kenny and Allison. She shows you what life is like, before and after the storm.

Rex Schneider did a wonderful job illustrating this story. His illustrations give you the feel of the 60’s and show how magnificent a child’s imagination can be.

So, how has Rachelle taken this book beyond reading? She has many activity pages such as coloring pages, crossword puzzle, a maze and a teacher’s guide to name a few. Her teacher’s guide is a great way for a teacher or parent to help children understand natural disasters in a fun way how to handle them.

Book of the Week: Moving Through All Seven Days by Kathy Stemke

Kathy will have you up out of your chair and moving as you read her book. Each day of the week has different moves from slipping, sliding and spinning on Sunday to wiggling, wobbling and whirling on Wednesday. She has lots of fun active words to take you through the week.

Illustrator Tony Glisson’s drawings are full of children having fun acting out Kathy’s words. I liked his illustrations for Kathy’s song near the end of the book.

How does Kathy take her book beyond reading? She has pages at the back of the book that take you through each day of the week with a fun game you can play. After that, she has several pages with fun language arts activities, coloring pages with writing skills added two them and fun word puzzles.

This is a great book to help parents and teachers alike teach the days of the week in a very fun way.

Story Starters for Children

Does your child like to write short stories?

The peaceful morning sun shining on the river made it sparkle like a million diamonds. Ripples slowly started coming across the river.

Book of the Week: Frankie, the Walk ‘n Roll Dog Activity Book by Barb Techel

This week’s book follows the picture book “Frankie the Walk ‘n Roll Dog” Barb Techel wrote about her dog Frankie. Back in April I did a review on it. You can read it here.

With her book, Barb took it beyond reading right away by visiting children and spreading Frankie's message of hope. Now she’s come out with this fabulous activity book to go even further beyond reading.

Frankie starts off her book saying "Always be positive and keep on rolling!" There are also several pictures of Frankie at the beginning and end of the book.

Barb has lots of fun activities for children to do and learn more about challenges, dreams and happiness. Fill your young ones time with word searches, story telling, coloring pages and much more.

At the end of the book, Frankie has an Achievement Award for finishing all the activities. Oh, and it has Frankie's paw print too.

Bilingual Friday: Pros and Cons of ESL and Bilingual Education Programs

I recently read an article comparing bilingual education and the ESL program. You can read it over at Bright Hub.

I think both sides of this argument have merit.

Immersing children in a 'foreign to them language' can help them pickup more of the local culture and ways of their new country as well as teach them a new language.

At the same time, letting them see that their own language and culture have a place in their new home is important too.

Why can't schools do both? Not only will it benefit the children from other countries, but it will help those who are native as well. Everyone benefits when they understand each other’s language and culture.

With that said, I think the hardest part of these programs happens when you have children from several very different foreign language backgrounds, like Spanish and Korean.

Do you offer bilingual education in both languages of pick one?

Do you use one language one week and the other the next?

How could you work it out so every child's language is included?

What do you think? Do you agree or disagree? I'd like to hear your thoughts on this very controversial subject here in the USA.

Book of the Week: The 4 Little Pigs by Jeanette Ramnarine

This week I have a really cool book for children. Jeanette has done a great job helping us teach our children about the use of money.

Welcome to "The 4 Little Pigs." It's Caleb's third birthday and his parents want him to learn how to save and spend money. One of his presents is a box of 4 little piggy banks. They are named schooling, saving, spending and sharing. See how Caleb learns what to do with his money and how he decides to spend it.

Jeanette has created an easy to read and understand book about finances that all young children can understand. She shows ways to teach your young ones how to handle their allowances. Franfou's illustrations fit perfectly.

So, how does Jeanette take her book beyond reading? First, the whole book lends itself to questions and discussions between parent and child. Beyond that at the back of the book there's a chart with guidlines for how to encourage your child to split their allowance into the four groups. Over at her website, 4 Piggies she has each piggy bank with ideas for children on what to do with the money inside. Also, when she talks at schools she has coloring pages of the 4 little piggy banks that children can color and talk about what they'd use the money in each one for.

Being Bilingual with Benefits

So, you are or aren’t bilingual. What’s the big deal anyway?

Here are a few articles that give some insight into why being bilingual is a good thing, a really good thing.

The Advantages of Being Bilingual

Most children have the capacity and facility to learn two or more languages. Research suggests there are advantages to being bilingual, such as, linguistic and metalinguistic abilities and cognitive flexibility, such as, concept formation, divergent thinking and general reasoning and verbal abilities. The advantages of bilingual education are many.
Knowing another language, and being encouraged to incorporate it, does not mean that the main language needs to suffer. If done in a way that allows for both languages to coexist then the advantages of bilingual education can be acknowledged without the threat that it will take away from learning the dominant language. Getting Excited and Learning Something New

Today I just want to share.

Over at Laughing Zebra – Books for Children this summer I'm hosting a virtual summer zoo camp. Many of you may have popped in to check it out. Thanks.

What I'm excited about is that I'm learning so much about the animals I'm highlighting. I'm also learning more amd more about how to do research on the internet. Honestly, I don't know how I lived without this wonderful tool for most of my life. The wealth of information out there is amazing. That's not to say there's not a lot of garbage out there too. You have to sift through it all to find the pearls you are looking for.

I use Google, Wikipedia, National Geographic Kids, and Discovery channel/Animal Planet to name a few of the big sites for basic information and videos. I also check out and all kinds of kid friendly activity sites to locate arts and crafts ideas and coloring pages.

So, how do you research something? Do you pop into a search engine in the comfort of your home? Or do you run down to the library? Or both?

Book of the Week: The Wuffle by Wave Walton

Today’s book takes you on a journey into the world of a wuffle. What’s a wuffle? In the words of the story:

“Now, the Wuffle is hard to describe. It’s sort of a small, but fat, and round little creature with little, scrawny legs almost like those of a frog. He’s real fuzzy with big, beady eyes. He is quite funny looking really.”

Because the wuffle thinks he’s funny looking, he hides from the animals in the forest when he goes out for a drink down at the river. Until one day when one of the animals discovers him…

Wave Walton has created a story that children can relate to when they feel like they’re different and have no friends. This book let’s us see how unique each one of us is and how that’s a good thing. Ian Crittenden’s illustrations help you feel just what the wuffle is feeling.

So, how is this book taken beyond reading? Wave has had the book translated into Chinese and published an English / simplified Chinese version. Over at his website, he has his book either available or soon to be available in Russian and Hindi with more to come.
In the future, Wave plans on having coloring pages and more to go along with his book, “The Wuffle.”

Spanish Friday: Spanglish anyone?

In my never ending searching on the internet for bilingual sites, I came across a very special one. SpanglishBaby, Raisnig Bilingual Kids. This site has just about everything you'd want at your finger tips if you're raising your child to be bilingual in English and Spanish. Come travel with me through the site.

One of their sponsors is Cody's Cuentos. Here you'll find all types of children books read out loud to you and your child. They have them divided into three levels. Basic, intermediate and advanced. Pop in and listen to a story or two.

Besides great blog posts, they have a wonderful bilingual resource list, a bilingual store called La Tiendita and even forums for parents to discuss raising children bilingually. The list of topics range from one-parent-one-language method of teaching to area playgroups for bilingual children and raising children biculturally. Great stuff!

Taking a Book Beyond Reading in Reverse

Do you collect shells, stamps or baseball cards?
Do you like to go bird watching, whale watching or watching the space shuttle launch ?
How about sports. Are you into basketball, soccer or football?

If you said yes to any of these categories, why not invite your child to share in your passion?

For example, I love to snorkel and collect shells. I can share these fun activities with my grand children. When we get home, we can pull out books on shells and tropical fish. From what we saw and collected, we can now use a book to find out what type of shells we collected and what kinds of fish we saw.

Don’t have a book? Hop on the internet and do a search together. There’s no telling what you’ll dig up.

Enjoy this summer with your children, share a hobby and take a book beyond reading in reverse.

Authors Who Go beyond Reading

Today I’m deviating from my normal post of Book of the Week. Instead I want to highlight several authors who do an outstanding job at taking books beyond reading.

Authors of children books are working harder than ever to take their books beyond reading. Here are a few well know authors who really know how to take their books beyond reading.

Barbara Park aka Junie B. Jones – What a fun filled site. There are activities galore you can sink your brains into. She has an interactive coloring book, fun downloadable activities, screensavers and trivia quizzes. For teachers she has a great teacher’s guide. Also, if you have older children she has books for them too.

Jan Brett – If you’ve never visited her web site, go there now. This is one author who really gets it. She’s a talented writer and illustrator. Her site will take you into her world of characters. She has art for teachers to use in their classrooms, interactive games for your children to do, murals you can print out, color and create and many more activities. She does all this using her loveable characters and even teaches you how to draw them.

Some new up and coming authors are working hard to give readers and parents lots of things to do. Here are a few examples:

Cynthia Reeg has a great Kids page. She has games, crafts, puzzles, reading fun, recipes and cool stuff. Definitely check this out.

Don P. Hooper’s activity page is awesome. He’s got coloring pages and interactive games that are a fun challenge.

So, check out your favorite children’s authors site. You never know what you might find.

Bilingual Day: Do you agree?

In looking around the internet for information on bilingualism, I came across a few articles that made sense to me.

The first one, The Advantages of Bilingualism and of Raising Children Bilingual touches on many reasons why making a second language part of growing up is a natural thing in families and should be encouraged. This site has many refrences that would be useful to anyone even just thinking about teaching a second language in their home.

The second article, Benefits Spanish bilingual education is mainly geared towards choosing a daycare center in Brookline, MA. However, there are points in this article that are important to any parent thinking about raising their children bilingual.

One more site I encountered in this search was a site that may be of interest to homeschoolers. This one, edHelper.com has a whole section on printable handouts for teaching Spanish. This is a subscription site costing $19.99 a year, but if you’re seriously wanting to teach your children Spanish (or German, Italian or French) as well as looking for supplemental materials for other subjects, this might be for you.

Book of the Week: The Little Man in the Map by E. Andrew Martonyi

Today I have a real treat for you. E. Andrew Martonyi has written a book that delights and teaches at the same time. You will learn all about the 50 states, where they are in the country and lots more. Here is the trailer to give you a sneak peek.

“The Little Man in the Map” is a clever rhyming story. Meet MIM, the Man in the Map. Have fun with him as he walks you through all 50 states with simple ways to remember where they are in relation to each other.

Ed Olson did a superb job illustrating the map of the United States. With his artwork and Andrew’s rhymes you can’t help but learn US geography.

This is a wonderful book for schools and homes to have on their bookshelves. Children and adults alike will learn something new from “The Little Man in the Map.”

Lets’ see how E. Andrew Martonyi takes his book beyond reading. At the end of the story there are two pages with maps of the USA. The first has each state as it was depicted in the story to help you put the country all together the way you just learned it. The second map is a blank map of the USA and as the little man in the map says; “A blank map of the USA Plus your imagination Are all you need to learn the states – All fifty in our nation.” Here you can practice what you’ve just learned from reading the book.

In addition, over at School Side Press there are a few more things to enhance your experience. There are two coloring pages from the book (free) and a wall map you can purchase and put up on your wall.

Bilingual Day: Learning Spanish Online

Have you ever wondered how to say something in another language but didn’t know where to turn? Do your children have friends whose first language isn’t English? Are they picking up words in a second language? Do you want to learn a second language too?

SpanishDict is a site I’ve used for several years. They will translate single words or whole sentences. What I like about it is they give you several different ways to say what you are trying to say.

For example: I typed in “Here comes the sun.” They came back with their translation as “Aqui viene el sol.” They then gave me a machine translation (Aqui venga el sol.) and Yahoo! Babel Fish translation (Aqui viene el sol.)
Why the different ways to say the same thing? Because different countries same things slightly differently from each other. Similar to the different ways we say things in different parts of the US. (soda or pop or soda pop)

Another thing this site offers is a link at the top of the page, Learn a new Spanish word each day. This is an easy way to learn words little by little.

Still another great part of this site is the Flashcard page. These are fun. Pop over there and see how you do.

There are so many things on this site, you could use it as your online school to learn Spanish. Other links here are:

Writing Fun: 8 Sentence Stories

So what is an 8 Sentence Story? It's a fun writing exercise. Here's how it works.

1. Write an eight word sentence.
2. Sentence two starts with the second word of the first sentence.
3. Sentence three starts with the third word of the first sentence.
4. - 8. Each sentence starts with the corresponding word from the first sentence.

Now, your eight sentence story might not make sense, or be grammatically correct, that's okay. It will get you started on a road to what might be your next story.

Do this with your children or students. You never know what you/they might come up with.

Here's one I wrote:

Danny loved sailing on the ocean with dad.
Loved the feel of the wind on his face.
Sailing was something Danny wanted to do all the time.
On the sailboat, Danny was the First mate.
The First Mate got to help the Captain sail the boat.
Ocean trips were always fun.
With dad’s help, the first thing he did was put up the sails.
Dad was a good Captain.

Book of the Week: My Friends at the Zoo by Richard Paniello illustrated by Vicky Knoll

Today’s book is an adorable story about a little girl’s day at the zoo. Her romp with the animals is sure to grab any child’s imagination. She makes the peacock a fancy hat, swims with the otters and skips rope with the elephants. Her adventures continue all day long with many more animals in the zoo.

Richard Paniello really has a way with rhyming in a very vivid way. Along with Vicky Knoll’s illustrations you are that little girl enjoying yourself at the zoo.

Reading “My Friends at the Zoo” will make you put on your sneakers and head for your local zoo.

So what does Richard do to take his book beyond reading? Besides whetting your imagination, he has an activities page over at his web site. There you’ll find coloring pages and links to other great kid sites.

Learning Spanish the Fun Way

There are lots of programs out there to teach you Spanish. I’ve searched and found a few that look like lots of fun while learning. Here they are:
Muzzy

Muzzy is in it’s 20th year teaching foreign languages. You can learn Spanish, Italian, French, German and Chinese! Check out Muzzy’s web site or purchse the Spahish version from the link below.

A great site with lots of kid friendly links is put up by the University of Northern Iowa. Bienvenidos offers links to games, lessons. Be aware, some of the links don’t work, but don’t let this keep you from exploring the page. What you do find will be full of information and fun things to do.

Mexico for Kids is a fun colorful site put out by the Mexican government. Here you will play games, learn about the history of Mexico and more interesting things all about Mexico.

History Fun Anyone?

History is facinating. I've been searching the internet for some fun sites that help bring history alive. Here are a few of them:

The History Channel has a page, "This Day in History" where you can learn all about events that happened today, whatever today is. Go there and amaze yourself and then your friends and family with the trivia you'll pick up.

Another great site is over at PBS Kids. Go back in time and learn secrets of the US Presidents, the election process and much more.

Hop over to Mr. Donn and have loads of fun. There are lots of free lessons and games and clip art too. This site is wonderful for children, parents and teachers alike.

I'm sure if you search the interent you'll find many more sites. If you have a favorite one, please share it here. I promise to give you full credit.

Book of the Week: Anna Mae Mysteries: The Golden Treasure by L.S. Cauldwell

Today I'm happy to share a great historical fiction book with all of you. The Golden Treasure is the first in a series that shows lots of promise.

Anna Mae Mysteries: The Golden Treasure by L.S. Cauldwell

Anna Mae, her brother Malcolm and her best friend Raul are on their way to school after what seemed like a very short summer. Strange things start happening; a ginger root that appears to be alive, a floating black fist and alphabet soup are a few of the pieces of the mystery Anna Mae has been chosen to solve. But how can a 7th grader solve the mystery of the Jefferson Davis gold theft that’s stumped adults since 1865? What does the gift she inherited from her grandmother have to do with it? Follow along on this challenging mystery and learn a bit about American history at the same time.

L. S. Cauldwell has done a superb job bringing together history and exciting fiction. She’s done her research and walks you through what happened to the Jefferson Davis gold that mysteriously disappeared while being transported through Lincoln County. She has added a bibliography and questions that help all who read her book learn more about that time in history.

Anna Mae Mysteries: The Golden Treasure is a good book for either summer reading or to supplement classroom studies about the Civil War and Jefferson Davis.

So, let's look at all the things L.S. Cauldwell has done to take this book beyond reading. First she gives us some back ground information at the beginning of the book about the story behind her story. She also has a map for you to follow along the path taken back in Civil War times and today.

Then at the end of the story, we learn about the free black men who fought on the Confederate side of the war. The book also introduces some Spanish words and she has a glossary in the back so you can learn some basic Spanish. If that's not enough, there is a full bibloigraphy incase you want to learn more and a great list of questions a parent, teacher or group of friends might use to discuss the book further. She even gives you her email address so you cna send your answers to her.

I'd say Ms. Cauldwell did an excellent job at taking her book beyond reading. Wouldn't you agree?

What’s Going on This Summer at Laughing Zebra - Books for Children?

Today I have a very exciting announcement. We at Laughing Zebra-Books for Children are going to have a virtual summer camp for all children world wide. The activities will be geared towards children between 4 and 8, but anyone can join in the fun.

Our camp’s name is “Zebee’s Summer Zoo Camp” and will be all about zoo animals. Zebee is our company mascot and he loves to talk to people. He’ll be talking about the camp happenings over at his blog, “Zooprise Party / Fiesta Zoorpresa” every Tuesday.

What exactly is a virtual summer camp? Good question. We will be posting on our Zoo Camp page each week all the information, games, crafts and other fun stuff for that week’s animal. You can send your pictures and comments there and we’ll post them there and over with Zebee on Tuesdays.

There will also be 5 prize packages given away. All the information on how to enter to win is listed on the Zoo Camp page. You can sign up there as well.

Parents, this will be a fun thing for your children to get involved in this summer. It’s free and will keep them entertained while they learn a few things. If you have friends with children between the ages of 4 and 8, tell them about it too. Thank you for helping to spread the word.

Book of the Week: “N is For Nature” by Tim Magner

I really enjoy reviewing children books. I get to see what others are putting out there for children to learn from. Today’s book is no exception. This is the third book by Tim Magner I’ve reviewed. All three deal with awareness of our planet and going green. Here’s my review for today.

What a clever way to teach the ABC’s. “N is for Nature” takes you on a journey around planet earth in a fun and imaginative way. You will not only learn your ABC’s, you will also learn about the Amazon, Great Apes, reptiles and more. Whether it’s animals, insects or habitats, it’s all part of nature.

Mike Nudelman is the incredibly talented illustrator of this book. His art brings the book to life. Each time you read through “N is for Nature” you’ll see something new.

Jennifer’s book, A Star in the Night has a very special beginning. In a time of great need, Jennifer saw how wonderful a community can be. Neighbors and friends came together and helped the Gladen family out, no strings attached.

Here is a peek into the story for you.

On a cold Christmas Eve night, David rushes from the mall to buy Mr. Rennetti’s special Christmas cookies. After visiting the store and buying the only two cookies left, David makes his way home. On the way, he has three encounters, which makes him rethink the meaning of Christmas. David faces challenges and tough decisions, even ones that Mom may not approve of. All the while a sparkling star seems to be following him. Join David on his adventurous way home.

So, let’s see how you can take this book beyond reading. How can you help out in your community? Below is a quick list. I’m sure you can come up with more.

Give Back to your Community

Help an elderly neighbor by:
* Taking their trash cans out each week
* Walking their dog for them when they’re sick
* Bringing them a get well card or a Happy Birthday card you made for them
* Just sit and talking with them
* Mow their lawn, rake up their leaves

When someone new moves in:
* Help your mom bake them cookies to take to them
* Get the other families/children on the block together for a welcoming party

Be a ‘big sister/brother’ to the new kid on the block:
* Show them around school
* Introduce them to your friends
* Invite them to go with you and your friends next time you go out together
* Show them around town

Bring your friend’s homework to them when they’re sick. They might not thank you, but you’ll be helping them not fall behind in their classes.

Go through your toys, books and clothes. Pick out the ones you don’t use or wear anymore that are still in decent condition. Donate them to a local shelter, either for homeless people or other cause.

There are many places you can volunteer in your community. Here are a few ideas to get you started.

* Serving at the local soup kitchen
* Helping out at the pet shelter
* Reading stories to younger children at the library
* Collecting cans for a local food drive

Okay, this list should get you started. Be creative and come up with your own ideas of how you can make a difference in the lives of your friends and neighbors by helping out.

So, how does Kim take her book beyond reading? A Talent for Quiet is a book about photography. There are several pages of photo tips, a glossary of terms and historical facts included in the book. She also created a ‘Stuffed Animal Memory Game’ that’s a lot of fun. Here is a reprint from Kim’s web page.

One hot July afternoon, when Genna was 2 years old, I put her down for a nap and then snuck all her favorite stuffed animals out to the back yard. I set them up in 10 little scenes. The cows played soccer against the sheep (with a Border Collie as referee). The naughty bunnies got into the garden. Ching, the siamese cat, stalked a toad in a toad house. CopyCat, the orange tabby finally learned to use the potty.

I chuckled all the way as I set up the scenes. Finally, I had found a use for the dozens of stuffed animals in our house! Before Genna woke up I snapped a picture of each scene.

Of course, Genna was only 2 at the time, so when she saw all her animals having fun in the backyard, it seemed perfectly natural to her. I suspect older children would find the dioramas more surprising. We walked around the yard and interacted with each scene. We had tea with the teddy bears and helped Oscar take a bath in the birdbath. It was a lovely, quiet afternoon.
Later, I had two of each photo printed and laminated in plastic. We used these as a memory game. Not only did the game help Genna with cognitive and motor skills, but each time we played, we remembered the afternoon with the animals outside.

Older children might have fun setting up their own animal scenes and even taking the pictures. My picture book A Talent for Quiet has simple tips for kids to take better pictures. Here are a few examples:

-Zoom in on the subject of your picture to get rid of background clutter.
-Try forcing your flash to fire, even in bright sunlight to eliminate harsh shadows.

I asked Kim to share a few things about herself. This is what she said.

My writing has opened up many opportunities for me in my community. I visit schools and libraries, reading my books to kids and presenting workshops on fiber art and photography. Once a month I have a booth at a different local craft fair, to sign books and sell my felt ornaments. So I spend most of my evenings creating fiber art sculptures to sell at these fairs. This year, I am on the fundraising committee for our local zoo. My picture book “A Talent for Quiet” was shot in the creek at the zoo’s nature preserve. I am very exciting that this book will be part of the 2010 fundraising drive.

What I do for fun, when I’m not at my computer, at a reading or making felt art? I just started horse-back riding. My daughter and I volunteer at Last Chance Ranch, a no-kill shelter for horses, dogs and just about any abandoned animal. I love to river-walk and go on photo safaris too.

Dottys’ Topsy Tale is the second Tospy Turvy tale to come out. First there was Chizzy's Topsy Tale. Kevin Collier illustrated both of these adorable rhyming stories. With Donna’s talent for story telling and Kevin’s imagination, the artwork is full of color and whimsy.

"Rattlesnake Jam" is a rhyming romp for reluctant readers - especially boys!
Pa hunts rattlers, and Gran cooks them up into her gooey green rattlesnake jam. Good for whatever ails you, Gran sells her concoction to folks near and far. However, Pa yearns for rattler over rice, or maybe rattlesnake pie: but can he persuade Gran to cook them for him?
Kevin Collier is the illustrator. He really knows how to make a book jump off the pages. You can smell and taste Gran’s rattlesnake jam just by looking at them.

Nothing Stops Noah by Shari Lyle-Soffe

“Bounding for Books Blog Tour” is here and my first guest is Shari Lyle-Soffe. She is a multi-published author of four picture books. Her latest is Nothing Stops Noah.

Nothing Stops Noah is a fun story. How many of us can remember helping out just to have everything seems to go wrong? Noah wants to buy a present for his mom, but he doesn’t have any money. He asks his grandpa if he can work in his pet store. When grandpa leaves him alone in the store and all the animals get out of their cages, see how Noah fixes the problem.

Kevin Collier’s illustrations are great. He has a way with facial expressions that really bring this story to life.

To help take this book beyond reading we have two things for you today. First is a coloring page. Right click on the coloring page to copy and print.

Noah likes to count. He can count to 10. How high can you count?

Let’s play a counting game with the cover of the book.
How many animals are there?
How many blue eyes do you see?
How many drops of water are there?
How many colors do you see on Noah?
How many feathers are flying?

Now, look around you. How many things do you see in your room that are the same colors as Noah’s shirt?
What other counting questions can you come up with? Share your ideas here, and who knows, you just might be our winner at the end of the tour.

I live in Southern Oregon with my husband, one dog and one cat and a pond full of goldfish. My yard is frequented by raccoons, deer, oppossum, squirrels, skunks, and all sorts of birds. We has even been visited by bear and cougar.
When I was a child I loved the "Little House Books", "White Fang" and "The Bobbsey Twins" books.

How Important is it to be Bilingual or Multi-lingual in Today’s World?

Have you ever been someplace, say an amusement park, or walking down the street and heard people speaking in different languages? Wouldn’t it be nice to be able to address someone in his or her native tongue?

I feel that being bilingual or multi-lingual is very important in today’s world. Countries that don’t encourage this are falling behind while those that do encourage it are racing ahead.

I speak English fluently and Spanish almost fluently. I understand even more languages. I can pick up words in French, Portuguese, German, Greek, Russian and converse with someone speaking in Italian while I speak in Spanish. Several of these languages have similarities, others don’t. I understand Greek and Russian because I’m of the Orthodox faith and have attended services in both languages.

“…the majority of the world’s population outside the United States is bilingual or multilingual, Marian noted. In the U.S., approximately one out of five American households speaks a language other than English at home, according to the U.S. Census. And, with higher birth rates among Hispanics relative to the rest of the population, that proportion is rapidly growing.”

Book of the Week: Sam Feels Better Now by Jill Osborne

This week’s book, “Sam Feels Better Now” is written by Jill Osborne and illustrated by Kevin Collier.

Sam is a young boy who has been scared by an awful thing. With the help of Ms. Carol, Sam learns how to handle his feelings about this awful thing that scared him and how to feel better.

Jill has done an outstanding job in relating to childhood traumas. With the use of this book, therapists can help children slowly get through traumatic events they have experienced. The book can be used as a tool to help a therapist lead a child down the path to recovery. There are many interactive pages in the book, for example, “draw a picture of something awful or scary”. These pages allow a child to express them self in a non- threatening way. At the end of the book, Jill gives guidelines for therapists who are using this book to help a child deal with their trauma.

Kevin’s art depicts how Sam feels and allows the child using the book to express their own feelings as well.

This book is a very good example of how authors and illustrators team up to take a book beyond reading.

Easy Way To Start Teaching Your Child A Second Language

Even if you don’t know a second language it’s good to have your children learn one. Why? Because in this ever shrinking world, knowing a second language (or even more) will give your child a competitive edge when they set out on their own.

So, here is a very easy first step.

Look around your home and yard. What do you see? Chairs, tables, trees, doors, etc. Now, go to your computer and do a search for a multi-lingual dictionary. For example: to translate words from English to Spanish, I use SpanishDict.com

Okay, now type in the words one at a time and get the translation.
Examples:

Door – Puerta
Window – Ventana
Tree – Árbol

Next, make word cards with the Spanish (or what ever language you want your child to learn) and write the words on them.

Last step, put the word card on the object so your child can read the word in their new second language.

You can go further and work on learning the alphabet, numbers and colors in your new language. (You’re going to learn it too.)

Have fun, you never know when your new language will come in handy!

Ways To Get Children Interested In Writing

There are many ways to spark imagination in a child. Here are a few ways to get those creative juices flowing even in the youngest children.

“What if”
Start by asking a “What if” type question and see what they say. Example:What if it really did rain cats and dogs?
What if you could fly? (Where would you go? What would you see?)

Give them a fill-in-the-blanks sentence. Example:
The ________ _______ down in a ________.
animal action word place
___________ put a _________ in the __________ and it _______________.
name object place action

“What happened next?”
Start telling a story. Then have each child in turn add to the story.
These are fun, especially when you have several children. Go around the circle continually adding to the story.

Take it a step further...
Record the story. You can type it out and have the children illustrate it.

Are Babies Too Young To Learn To Read?

What do you think about this? If you’re like many parents, you probably started reading to your children before they were born and then continued the habit after they came into this world.

Like learning a second language, children’s brains, young children’s brains are like a sponge and can learn all kinds of things at a very young age. Many agree that before a child is 5 years old they can learn a second language and now studies show they can learn to read as well.

Go Beyond Reading: Take it one step further

Need another idea to take a book beyond reading? Try taking it one step further. For example, you’ve just finished reading a book about moving to a new place. Ask your child or students to pick a city and research the area as if they are going to move there. What does the new city have for children to do? Do they have a library? Parks? Museums? Is there a lake or a river nearby? Are there any amusement parks? Mountains?

Next have them pick a different country to move to. What would be different there? What kind of money would they need? What language would they have to learn to speak? Is the country inland or on the sea? What do the houses look like there? What are the traditional foods? Holidays?

This can lend itself to all kinds of ideas and get the children excited about learning about new places.

“An Environmental Guide from A to Z” by Tim Magner and illustrated by Aubri Vincent-Barwood

Mathematics is a building block for all children. In this day and age it’s essential to master this subject to get ahead and be able to compete in many job markets.

Drawing is fun!

I love to draw, don't you? Drawing is a great way to help your child take a book beyond reading. They can draw their favorite part of the story, draw what they think happened after the story ended, draw their favorite character in the story, and the list of ideas goes on.

Book of the Week: Kindergarten Sudoku by Peter and Nicola Kattan

Kidergarten Sudoku by Peter and Nicola Kattan is a great way to learn sudoku.

Kindergarten Sudoku is a fun easy way to learn sudoku. Instead of 9x9 adult sudoku square puzzles, you have 4x4 square puzzles. There are several different varieties of the game incorporated in the book as well. There’s Classic - with numbers, Alphabet – with letters, Animal – with cats, dogs and fish, Shapes – basic shapes of circles, squares, triangles and stars and Symbols – sun, smiley face, heart and the universal symbol for “no”.
The book starts with basic instructions and terminology and of course the rules of sudoku. There are also several step by step ‘show and tell’ type puzzles that walk you through how to play this game.

There are easy, medium and hard puzzles, just like in adult sudoku books. All the answers to all the puzzlesa are at the back of the book. There is also a score sheet and a page to write notes.

A very entertaining way to teach your youngster deductive reasoning, which is after all what sudoku is all about. Also, if you’ve ever tried sudoku but didn’t quite get it (like me) this book will even help you learn the art of doing sudoku too.

Online Kid Encyclopedias

Did you have a set of World Book Encyclopedia or Encyclopedia Britannica in your home when you were a child? I used to spend hours going through them.

Encyclopedias are a great source of multiple subjects. Here are a few that are geared towards children.

Over at Encyclopedia Britannica there are some free educational games for 7-11 year olds.

This is really cool. They have an almanac, dictionary, thesaurus and encyclopedia. They even have a homework center! Great for older children.

Book of the Week: “Professor Horace, Cryptozoologist” by Kevin Collier.

This weeks book is an adventure in "Cryptozoology." What's that you ask?

According to Wikipedia:

Cryptozoology (from Greek κρυπτός, kriptos, "hidden" + zoology; literally, "study of hidden animals") is the study of and search for animals which fall outside of contemporary zoological catalogs. It consists of two primary fields of research:

*The search for living examples of animals taxonomically identified through fossil records which are considered to be extinct.

*The search for animals that fall outside of taxonomic records due to a lack of empirical evidence, but for which anecdotal evidence exists in the form of myths, legends, or undocumented sightings.

So, how do you make that into a fun and interesting picture book? Leave it to Kevin Collier and he'll find a way.

In this book, Professor Horace is curious about creatures of legends and myths. He sets out on a grand adventure to see if he can find any of these creatures. I won’t spoil the story, but it’s a wild ride he takes you on.

The illustrations are great, as are all of Kevin’s books. They draw you in and really add to the story with all the extra things that are in them.

How does this book go beyond reading? At the back of the book, Kevin created an index. All the mythical creatures in the story are indexed by the pages they appear on as well as a few sentences about the origins of each of them.

A Few Cool Kids Sites I Found While Surfing

The internet continues to amaze me. It doesn't where in the world you live, you have access to it all. Truly global.
